your energy matters more than your to-do list

If you’ve ever looked at your to-do list and felt like crying, you’re not alone. Maybe it just feels like way too much work that you just don’t have the time to get through! Or perhaps you’re worried you don’t have the skills you need to do the jobs you’ve set for yourself. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if we could just tick off more tasks, we’d feel better. I’ve been there – if I’m more productive, more successful and more in control I will have won. Here’s why your Why your energy matters more than your to-do list.

I’ve come to realise, both personally and through the work I do with my clients, is that no amount of ‘doing’ can make up for misaligned energy. You can smash through a list of tasks at lightning speed and still feel stuck, unfulfilled or burnt out.

And that’s because success isn’t about doing more. It’s about being aligned with your mission and goals, and that starts with your energy.

Energy, mindset and manifestation

When I talk about energy, I’m talking about your emotional state, your sense of purpose and how you feel each day. Energy is the invisible current that fuels everything else we do. If your energy is scattered, anxious or low, it doesn’t matter how well-structured your plan is, life will feel hard. And even if you throw yourself at work, it won’t be sustainable. That’s why your energy matters more than your to-do list.

This is where mindset and manifestation come in. Your thoughts, beliefs and emotions shape how you show up and what you attract. When you’re aligned energetically – so when your actions match your values, and your head and heart are pulling in the same direction – everything starts to flow more easily. You’ll be able to start making decisions from a place of clarity, not fear. You feel more grounded, more open and more empowered.

On the other hand, taking action from a place of misalignment (for example, saying yes when you want to say no, or launching something because you feel you “should”) drains your energy fast. It’s like trying to drive with the handbrake on.

My own shift to better energy alignment

I used to think I had to do more to succeed. It’s no surprise because it’s a narrative we hear at school when we’re young and about the adults in our lives. ‘Just work harder and you’ll get there’ or ‘she’s a hard worker’. So, when things aren’t working, we’re taught to work harder and push through. But that mindset led me straight into burnout.

Everything changed when I started tuning into my energy first. I began noticing what felt heavy and what felt light. Then, I got clear on what moved the needle and what was just ‘busywork’. I started honouring rest, joy and intuition, and my work became more effective, not less.

Practical ways to shift your energy

If this is resonating with you, here are a few simple ways to begin shifting your energy today:

  • Journal every day, and during that process ask yourself: How do I feel? What do I need right now? What’s one thing I can do to support my energy today?
  • Visualise. Spend five minutes each morning visualising your goals as already achieved. Focus on how it feels. This primes your mind to look for aligned opportunities.
  • Move your body. Stuck energy often needs physical movement to shift. A walk, stretch or dance around the kitchen to your favourite song can work wonders.
  • Check in before taking action. Ask yourself, is this aligned with my values? Am I doing this from love or from fear?
  • Protect your energy. That might mean setting boundaries, saying no or spending less time scrolling.

Your energy is your foundation. It shapes your actions, your results and how you experience life. So next time you’re staring down your to-do list and feeling overwhelmed, take a pause and check in with your energy first. Because when your energy is aligned, that to-do list starts to take care of itself.
