Bookkeeping, invoicing, chasing payments and paying invoices… They’re not the sexiest topics, are they? But can money be spiritual? I argue that it can be! This blog explores the spiritual side of bookkeeping, so let’s dive in!

For most business owners, finances are filed under “serious stuff”, and rightly so. Your numbers really matter. But over the years, I’ve come to realise something powerful: just because money is serious, doesn’t mean it can’t also be spiritual. And as a qualified accountant and Law of Attraction coach, I’m uniquely well placed to comment!

Over the years, as I’ve gotten further in my money mindset journey, I’ve learnt that bookkeeping isn’t just about balancing the books. It’s also about balancing your relationship with money. And when you start seeing money through a spiritual lens, everything begins to shift.

Money is energy

We often think of money as hard, fixed and external. But the truth is, money is spiritual, it is energy. It responds to how we think about it, how we feel about it and how we treat it.

Avoiding checking your numbers, resenting your expenses or dreading the moment you log into your accounts? That energy is so fearful and so negative that it creates blocks. But when you approach your money with love, curiosity and respect, you’ll find that it starts to flow more freely.

That’s why I invite my clients to think of bookkeeping as more than admin. It’s a form of money magic. It’s how we clear the energetic clutter, release fear and create space for abundance. That is the spiritual side of bookkeeping.

Bookkeeping as a ritual

Even I (yes, a bookkeeper!) used to sometimes put off my accounts, like many people do. But these days, I treat my bookkeeping sessions as sacred time in my business.

I set the scene. I light a candle, get my favourite stationery out and make sure I have my crystals to hand. Citrine is a favourite for manifesting abundance, and green aventurine helps me stay calm and open-hearted. I put on relaxing music, open up my spreadsheets or accounting software and settle in with gratitude.

Before I look at a single number, I pause to say:

“I am grateful for every pound that flows into my business and my life.”

Then I begin.

Let go of judgement

Looking at your finances doesn’t have to feel stressful. My advice to my clients is to try and be curious, not critical. What are the numbers showing you? What patterns can you spot? Where is your spending aligned with your values, and where is it not? Are you undercharging for your services (so many of us are)? Are you overspending, and can you figure out why? Maybe you’re riding out a seasonal dip?

Your numbers are never a judgement or verdict on you. They’re simply feedback, and as I said earlier, they’re embedded in energy. And when you start being open to that energy, you’ll gain clarity, confidence and control.

Track and celebrate your wins

One of the most powerful habits I’ve built is keeping a money wins journal alongside my bookkeeping notes. Every time a payment comes in, a new client signs up or I receive unexpected income, I write it down and celebrate.

This practice rewires your brain to focus on growth, not gaps. It reminds you that good things are happening, even when things feel quiet. And it trains your nervous system to feel safe with success. All very important things!

You can find more of my favourite affirmations on the Resources page of my website, but here are a few you can try:

“Every number I track creates space for more abundance.”

“I manage my money with ease, clarity, and grace.”

“Money flows to me and through me in aligned ways.”

Align your strategy with your soul

There’s a common belief that spirituality and strategy can’t or don’t mix, but I disagree. In fact, your books and your beliefs are deeply connected.

Overspending can sometimes reflect a lack of boundaries or a fear of missing out. Undercharging might stem from your self-doubt or a scarcity mindset you’ve had since childhood.

When I sit down with my accounts, I’m not just looking at numbers. I’m looking at how I’ve been showing up. Where I’ve been in integrity and where I’ve abandoned my values. That’s why bookkeeping, for me, is both a financial and spiritual practice.

I hope this blog has helped to show you that bookkeeping doesn’t have to be boring, soulless or stressful. When you reframe it as a ritual of abundance, it becomes a way to honour your business, your energy and your growth.

The more you nurture what you love, the more it flows. And the more you get comfortable with your finances, the more empowered you’ll feel to make decisions from a place of clarity and confidence.

So, light the candle, pick up the crystal and take a deep breath – it’s time to bring a little magic into your money!
