How much do you speak to yourself throughout the day? I don’t really mean talking out loud to yourself – though that’s part of it – but more about the inner monologue in your own mind. Little comments, observations and assumptions that feel so familiar you barely register them anymore.

“Don’t be so stupid”

“Well, that was silly wasn’t it”

“I’m terrible with money.”

“Things like that never work out for me.”

“I’m just not confident.”

Most people think of these as passing thoughts, but over time they become something much more powerful. They become the messages your subconscious mind starts accepting as truth. And that’s exactly where the idea of autosuggestion begins.

What is autosuggestion?

Autosuggestion is the process of influencing your subconscious mind through repeated thoughts, language and beliefs. The concept became widely known through the work of French psychologist and pharmacist Émile Coué. While working with patients, he noticed that people who believed a treatment would help often experienced better outcomes. That led him to explore the idea that the things we repeatedly tell ourselves can shape how we think, feel and behave.

His most famous phrase was: “every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” Simple as it sounds, the idea behind it was powerful. Coué believed that repetition mattered, and that over time, the subconscious mind began to absorb the messages it hears most often. And, we’re all already doing this whether we realise it or not.

The stories we repeat become familiar

One of the things I see a lot in the women I work with is how deeply ingrained certain beliefs can become, especially around money, success and self-worth. They start as small comments and when repeated over and over again, they get more powerful.

“I’m useless with numbers.”

“I never seem to get ahead financially.”

“I’m not the kind of person who earns that much.”

At first, these thoughts can feel harmless or even factual. But when the same message is repeated often enough, your brain stops questioning it. It simply accepts it as part of your identity. You might not notice it, but that identity begins shaping your decisions, your confidence and what you believe is possible for you.

How autosuggestion shapes your financial reality

This is where autosuggestion links so closely to money mindset. If you repeatedly tell yourself that money is stressful, difficult or never quite available, your mind begins filtering your experiences through that lens. You might become more focused on what’s lacking than what’s growing, or overlook opportunities because part of you has already decided they aren’t really for you.

I often see women working incredibly hard while carrying deeply limiting internal narratives about what they’re capable of earning or achieving. And no amount of strategy can fully override a belief system that constantly pulls you back. That’s why mindset work matters so much. Changing your financial reality is about changing your actions and working on the internal conversation happening underneath those actions.

It’s not about pretending everything is perfect

I think it’s really important to say that conscious autosuggestion isn’t about denying reality or forcing yourself into false positivity. You don’t have to wake up every morning declaring that life is perfect if it doesn’t feel true. In fact, affirmations that feel too far removed from your current reality can sometimes create even more resistance.

The real shift comes from becoming more intentional about the language you repeat most often. Instead of “I’m terrible with money,” perhaps it becomes, “I’m learning to feel more confident with money.” Instead of “Nothing ever changes for me,” perhaps it becomes, “I’m starting to see new possibilities.”

Becoming more aware of your internal language

One of the simplest ways to begin this work is through awareness. Start noticing the phrases you repeat automatically, especially during stressful moments or when things aren’t going to plan. Pay attention to the way you speak about yourself, your finances and your future.

You might be surprised by how often your internal language reinforces exactly the things you’re trying to move away from. And once you notice it, you have a choice. You can continue reinforcing the same story, or you can begin introducing a new one.

Changing the conversation over time

The beautiful thing about the subconscious mind is that it responds to consistency more than intensity. You don’t need to make dramatic changes or force yourself into feeling more positive. Just be consistent and on the right track will get more powerful results. Even by reading this blog I bet you’re going to be more aware of how you speak to yourself and start to address it!

It’s time to try a new way of thinking about success

In closing, I’d say that most people underestimate how much influence their inner dialogue has over their lives. But if you’re constantly repeating messages of fear, limitation or self-doubt, your mind and body begin organising around those beliefs without you even realising it.

That’s why conscious autosuggestion can be so powerful. It invites you to become more intentional about the story you’re reinforcing every day. Over time, the thoughts you repeat the most shape what you’re capable of receiving.  They shape what you believe you’re capable of receiving too. If this is something you recognise in yourself, and you’d like my support in shifting the beliefs and patterns sitting underneath your finances, this is exactly the kind of work we explore inside my Aligned Abundance Academy.
