what is NLP?

You might have spotted that I’m a qualified NLP practitioner, but do you know what that means? You’ve probably heard the phrase a few times and are keen to learn more. Perhaps you’d like to learn what it is and how it works! In this blog I’ll be answering the question ‘what is NLP?’. I’ll also share some examples of how it can be used to help people just like you through therapy, coaching and personal development. I’ve loved every moment of learning about NLP in my career so far and never fail to be amazed at how transformative it can be. I imagine you’ll feel the same way, so let’s get started.

What is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It is a psychological approach that examines the connections between our neurological processes (neuro), language (linguistic), and human patterns of behaviour and thinking (programming.) Put a little more simply, NLP is the idea that our thoughts, both conscious and unconscious, affect our behaviour, and that we can learn to control those thoughts. It was first developed as a theory in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They believed it was possible to identify the patterns of thoughts and behaviours commonly seen in successful individuals and apply them to other people.

How can NLP help you master your mindset?

I’ve written about limiting beliefs in my blog about subconscious reprogramming, which you can read here. I know from personal experience how much our thoughts and beliefs can limit our chance to shine in all areas of life and wanted to be able to reprogramme my thoughts. That’s why I’ve spent such a long time working on my mindset and invested in coaching courses to learn all about NLP. Now, my subconscious is my internal cheerleader all day, every day, rather than a sabotaging voice in my head.

NLP gives us a toolkit of techniques and strategies that can help us develop a more effective and positive mindset. By studying NLP you’ll be able to take a deeper dive into how language and communication can influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. NLP techniques often involve examining and reshaping the way we think, perceive the world, and interact with others.

What are the different NLP techniques?

Anchoring

Anchoring refers to the technique of associating a specific gesture, word or action with a particular emotional state or mindset. By consciously creating and triggering these anchors, individuals can effectively manage their emotions in difficult or stressful situations and improve their overall wellbeing. For example, you might decide to anchor a feeling of confidence to a simple hand gesture, so that you can access that feeling of confidence when you need it – for example if you get nervous about standing up and speaking in public or preparing to drive on the motorway.

Reframing

Reframing is the practice of changing your perspective or interpretation of a situation to see it in a more positive light. It involves shifting from a negative or limiting mindset to a more empowering one. Instead of thinking “I didn’t get the job I interviewed for, I’m a failure”, you reframe it as “I didn’t get this particular job but it’s an opportunity to learn from the experience and refine my skills for future interviews. Rejections are just part of the journey towards success.” By mastering the skill of reframing, you can transform challenges into opportunities, reduce stress, enhance your resilience and develop a more optimistic outlook on life.

Rapport building

Rapport building refers to the art of establishing a deep and positive connection with others by mirroring their communication style. That help you to build trust and enhances mutual understanding. Mastering rapport-building techniques helps you foster healthier relationships, improve communication and gain insight into other people’s perspectives. That all boosts your self-awareness and emotional intelligence which are both valuable assets in personal growth and self-improvement.

Visualisation

Visualisation is the idea that someone can create vivid mental images of their desired goals, aspirations, or outcomes. By regularly engaging in visualisation exercises, you can reinforce your motivation to reach a goal, enhance your focus and boost your self-confidence. For example, let’s use the example of being scared about speaking in public. Visualise how it will feel when it goes well. Imagine people coming up to thank you for your speech and to congratulate you on how well it went. Even think about what you can see, hear and even smell. This powerful tool in personal development allows you to align your thoughts and actions with your goals. That will help you turn your dreams into reality!
